Environment Care in PVPS

Park View wants to instill a strong sense of environmental conservation and promote

awareness. The school provides opportunities to staff and pupils to apply knowledge, skills & values of care, protect and improve the environment through awareness and actions.

As such, activities based on the environment take place both in school and outside school such as the Green Month Activities, Coastal Clean-up, Recycling Projects and Green Wave.

Green Month

PVPS celebrated The Green Month with a series of events aimed at increasing environmental awareness amongst staff and pupils, and equipping them to make more environmental friendly choices in their daily lives. The theme for this year was ‘We are Going Green’. The Green Month, in its third year running, had activities planned by the Science Department and the Green Ambassadors.

Go Green Project - Paper collection for Recycling

The objectives of the programme are to cultivate in our pupils an interest in environment through involvement in recycling projects and to provide opportunities for action to practice the 3Rs. The Green Ambassadors promoted the Go Green project through assembly talks.

Inter-class cleanliness competition (Model Class)

Cleanest Classroom competition was conducted to instill in our pupils that keeping the school clean is a concerted effort. The competition aimed to raise pupils’ awareness regarding the importance of cleanliness and social responsibility and it also provided added motivation and incentive for pupils to take ownership of the school premises.

Interactive Game Booths on 3R by Millinea Institute

Millinea Institute pupils set up an interactive booth on the 3Rs. They shared on 3Rs and the importance of saving water and energy with the Park View pupils through interesting games, skit and quiz. The pupils could play & become learn recycling messages.

P2 Save the Water Pledge Writing

Saving water is a habit that has to be cultivated from young.  Saving water habits and respect for environment were taught as part of FTGP lessons to P2 pupils. It was carried out over 2 lessons. Then P2 pupils became the ambassadors to share the tips on saving water with their own family. They also created pledges to save water to strengthen commitment. These pledges were displayed on the board in the canteen to promote the save the water messages to the others in the school.

P4: Litter-Free Neighbourhood

In line with our school’s Green Month & Values-In-Action programme, our P4 pupils participated in a Litter-Free Neighbourhood activity. Through this activity, we want to encourage all pupils to play an active role in protecting the environment and create awareness on their responsibility towards our environment beyond school and home. Pupils will learn empathy for cleaners & also be aware of the dangers of killer-litter. Pupils went to the surrounding blocks of flats near the school to pick up litter using the tongs and gloves provided.

P6: Ecology Trip & Coastal Cleanup

The P6 pupils went on a learning journey on Ecology to Pasir Ris Beach. The pupils also did coastal clean-up at the beach after exploring the mudflat.

The objectives of the learning journey are to:

  • Increase pupils’ awareness of the ecosystem of the seashore community in Singapore;

  • Learn about the diversity of life on the seashore and selected animals and plants’ adaptations to life on the seashore;

  • Relate and extend pupils’ Science knowledge to real life experiences so as to provide pupils with a deeper understanding about life around them;

  • Integrate a meaningful Community Involvement Project (CIP) where pupils take action for the environment.

Green Wave 2014

Green Wave 2014 is a campaign to educate youth about nature and biodiversity. This year, the event on May 22 2014, takes on a special meaning as it was the day PVPS Gardens and eco-pond – The Energy Hub was officially declared open by Mdm Goh. The Energy Hub will be a useful resource as a teaching tool and for self-exploration for pupils. Belinjau and Longan trees were also planted.

Our parent volunteers also set up an interactive booth to educate on the biodiversity of plants. The theme was “Life with Leaves”. Pupils were encouraged to feel, smell and find out the uses of leaves in food and medicine and in our different cultures.

Children’s Market

Children’s Market @ PVPS is part of the school’s efforts to promote environmental awareness amongst our pupils through action. The markets provide opportunities for our P5 and P6 pupils to develop their leadership skills by being actively involved in recycling projects through innovation and enterprise. Besides extending the school’s recycling efforts, it showcases our pupils’ entrepreneurial spirit through sale of donated items.

Recycling Corners

To inculcate the culture of recycling in every pupil and staff, the school has set up various recycling points to make recycling a stone’s throw away. We have the recycling bins at the Recycling Corner for the different recyclables, reusable cartons in classrooms for paper, carton boxes in the staffroom, staff lounge and photocopying room for paper. A recycling corner was set up in the canteen and also behind the flagpole to encourage pupils to recycle paper and plastic bottles.
